The State of International Calling in Cabo

Vast strides have been made to how international phone calls from Mexico are made. What once pitted tourists to the mercy of calling cards have been replaced with a more current technology, Voice Over IP or VOIP. Commonly referred to as "locales", these booths are to be found all over Cabo, sometimes even on the sides of streets.

At around 2 pesos a minute, roughly 20 cents, this has been adopted as the go-to route for calling home to friends and family. There is a catch, however, although phone-fare has dropped considerably, rates for internet connectivity still remain at an insufferable high, especially for those using SKYPE.

If you happen to still carry a phone card for one reason or another, you will discover that on the backside, there are 1-800 numbers accessible by most gentrified countries, Mexico included. While they still function the same way you've come accustomed to, they are still just as convenient, however not as cheap as a "locale".

For longer stays, we suggest investing in a local cell-phone, something temporary, and that typically cost 400 pesos, affording you 300 pesos of air-time.

Much progress has been made to how we call and how much we pay to earn that amenity. Once a source of high tariffs and vacation-outrage has evolved into a true convenience.
